In this year-long project, I visit one family once a month and photograph whatever it is they are doing that day. There’s no staging and very little planning ahead. We just pick a day each month and I show up with my camera. My goal is to to photograph real “slices of life” in an effort to find the beauty in the ordinary and the extraordinary in our own everyday lives.

In May, I joined the family on a sunny Sunday afternoon at a gorgeous Seattle park. It was Mother’s Day and apparently the family has a tradition of visiting this park every Mother’s Day, rain or shine. Luckily, this year, it happened to be shine.
As with past months, I photographed mostly candid moments, however, this time I decided to use the opportunity of being in a beautiful setting to take a few family portraits. My favorite is the last one which I think I’m going to title “Family Tree.” Not only do they visit this park every year, but they also climb this particular tree ever year.
I love that they have so many traditions. I have a feeling the kids will carry on many of these traditions with their own families some day.
My other favorite moment of the day was when Benjamin and Ellery were hanging out in the grass and Benjamin started teaching Ellery how to whistle through the grass. She kept getting a “honk” sound from her grass and the two of them couldn’t stop cracking up.
Priceless.
