In this year-long project, I visit one family once a month and photograph whatever it is they are doing that day. The point is to document their lives over the course of the year and to find the beauty in everyday life. There’s no staging and very little planning ahead. We just pick a day and I show up with my camera.
In March, I hung out with my favorite Seattle family on a warm Wednesday afternoon and joined them on a visit to a local high school, where they ran around the track and tossed a baseball around. Again, none of this was planned, but you could imagine my joy when the boys pulled the baseball out! I had been secretly hoping that this would happen on one of my visits and am so glad it did!
It was such a fun afternoon. They told me that they visit the track as a family on a pretty regular basis. This is one of many family traditions that they have. For instance, every Valentine’s Day, they have a picnic in their living room as a family. I LOVE this idea! I may have to steal it!
I’m visiting the family again this Friday for our April photo shoot and I really have no idea what will happen. The true test for me is to just show up without any preconceived ideas, to find the interesting and beautiful moments, and catch those moments with my camera before they pass.
Have I mentioned how much I love my job?

You can view photos from the other months in the one year :: one family gallery or in the January and February blog posts.

I know I’ve said this before but I just adore your Slice of Life philosophy!
And what a cute family. Love love love and fun on an ordinary, beautiful day.
So Awesome Darrah.
This could get repetetive…but of course I love seeing every month what you have done to chart my family’s year. This one is especially good, but I have loved them all and can hardly wait for the next one!
Sarah Ann: Thank you so much for stopping by. I’m so glad my Slice of Life philosophy resonates with you!
Tam: This is one of my favorites, too. I’m so glad you liked it!
Very nice!
